Loyalhanna Creek Watershed Assessment and Restoration Plan

Situation:
For those that are familiar with the Loyalhanna Creek Watershed, they are aware of the treasure that is held in its waters. Clear, pristine streams that flow out of hollows of the Laurel and Chestnut Ridges, pools filled with trout and miles of protected water that snake through a maze of large boulders and sycamore trees. It is a treasure at risk and has been for quite some time. Pressures of development, the remnants of historic coal mining, and the mark of human activity threaten the quality and the future of the Loyalhanna Creek

Solution:
In 2002, LWA and its partners met to discuss future work and remediation throughout the watershed. At the time, there were no comprehensive documents that described the Loyalhanna Creek Watershed and its environmental challenges. The group decided that it was critical to create a complete assessment and analysis that would document and guide the future work and remediation. Funding from the state's Growing Greener program in 2002 propelled the LWA into a project that spanned over the next four years. Today the Loyalhanna Creek Watershed Assessment and Restoration Plan serves as an important tool to the LWA and its partners.
